serial #264, 40-72, 26" round barrel with bright near excellent bore that shows just very slight frosting in the grooves. This is a very honest and clean example of these handsome flatside 1895 rifles. The barrel retains about 90% evenly thinning original blue finish overall which is beginning to blend with a pleasing smooth brown patina in areas. The action and magazine retain about 75% original blue finish with loss due to light even flaking on the action, the magazine blue itself is stronger with less flaking. The plain walnut buttstock and schnabel tipped forend with ebony insert rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining, very few handling marks, excellent fit and rich color. The rifle is sighted with a Beach style combination front and semi-buckhorn rear sporting sights. All screwheads remain clean and the hammer retains most of its strong original color case-hardened finish. The included factory letter confirms the configuration of the rifle and shows receipt in the warehouse on May 11, 1896 and shipping on June 10, 1896 with a return and repair on June 22, 1898. A nice clean and completely honest early three digit flatside rifle. (18087-101) {ANTIQUE} [Kenneth Fry Collection] (3500/5500) SOLD FOR $4,312.50
