Description Update (3/15/17): A couple spots of light pitting on barrel

serial #1404, 45-75, 28" octagon barrel with a near very good bore that shows some scattered light pitting. This rifle is in the first model open top serial range yet it is equipped with a second model thumbprint dust cover. The factory letter is interesting as it does not show an original ship date and reads as follows: Rifle, octagon barrel, set trigger, Returned by Miller February 18, 1882, Re-shipped May 12, 1882 #32685, Received in Warehouse on January 25, 1878, shipped from warehouse on May 8, 1878 order number 11779. It is our feeling, and the timeframe works perfectly, that this rifle was factory converted to second model specs with added dust cover during the return in 1882. The metal surfaces of rifle bear a smoky gray blue color overall. All markings remain clear and legible, edges are crisp and rifle is generally free of any pitting. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate about excellent as lightly refinished many years ago. An interesting 1876 rifle with factory update.
